One of the more confusing parts of planning Umrah is realising there isn't just one visa option, there are two different digital pathways, and which one applies to you depends on how you're travelling. Get this mixed up and you can end up with the wrong type of entry for what you actually plan to do in Saudi Arabia. Here's how the two systems actually work.
The Saudi tourist eVisa: fast, but not Umrah specific
The official Saudi eVisa portal, run through Visit Saudi, lets eligible travellers from around 66 countries, Australia included, apply for an electronic tourist visa entirely online. The process is genuinely simple: fill in your application, pay the visa fee, and receive your eVisa electronically, generally without needing to visit an embassy. It's a one year, multiple entry visa allowing stays of up to 90 days per visit, and it explicitly covers activities including "events, family and relatives visits, leisure, and Umrah (excluding Hajj)."
This is worth knowing because a lot of Umrah packages, particularly shorter, more flexible trips, are booked using this exact visa. It's not a lesser option, it's simply a general tourist visa that happens to permit Umrah as one of several allowed activities.
The Nusuk Umrah registration route
Separately, the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah runs its own dedicated system through Nusuk, specifically built around pilgrimage registration and accredited service providers. Many travel agencies book pilgrims through this system because it ties your Umrah registration directly to a recognised provider and your specific package, including accommodation and dates, rather than a standalone tourist entry. If your provider mentions Nusuk registration rather than a general tourist eVisa, that's this system, and it's a legitimate, often preferred route for Umrah specifically.
The practical difference for you as a traveller usually comes down to what your provider recommends based on your trip. Either route gets you into Saudi Arabia to perform Umrah, but they're processed through different systems, so it's worth asking your provider directly which one your booking uses, rather than assuming.
What "instant approval" actually means in practice
eVisa systems generally process applications quickly once your documents are correct and complete, sometimes within minutes, though it's sensible to allow a few working days as a buffer rather than applying the night before you fly. The speed depends entirely on the accuracy of what you submit. A passport scan that's slightly cropped, a photo that doesn't meet the specification, or a name that doesn't match your passport exactly will slow things down regardless of which system you're using.

Smartraveller's official advice for Saudi Arabia specifically warns travellers to be cautious of fraudulent visa links, since a number of unofficial websites mimic the real eVisa portal and charge inflated fees, or worse, collect your passport details without actually processing anything. Only apply through visa.visitsaudi.com directly, or through a travel provider you've already verified, never through a link sent in an unsolicited message or a search ad that looks slightly off.
What to do if your application gets stuck
Occasionally an application sits pending longer than expected, usually because of a document mismatch rather than anything more serious. If this happens, resist the urge to submit a second application through a different site hoping it will process faster. That's exactly the kind of situation the fraudulent site warnings above are about. Instead, check your application status through the official portal you originally applied through, and if you booked through an agency, ask them to follow it up directly since they'll often have a clearer line to the provider than you do on your own.
