Anyone can build a slick website in a weekend. That's not a criticism of the industry, it's just the reality of booking Umrah online: a good looking page and a low price don't tell you whether the agency behind it can actually deliver your flights, hotel and visa on the dates you're paying for. A few checks, done before you pay anything, tell you far more than the website ever will, and most of them take less time than reading this article.
Start with who is actually licensed to sell you this
Umrah packages that include visa processing are supposed to come from service providers accredited by Saudi Arabia's Ministry of Hajj and Umrah. Nusuk, the ministry's official platform, publishes a list of accredited service providers, and it's worth a look before you commit to an agency you haven't used before. If an agency can't point you to how they're licensed, or gets vague when you ask, that's worth pausing on. A genuine operator will usually mention this without being pushed, because it's one of the things that separates them from a reseller with no direct standing.
If it's an Australian business, check the ABN
Any legitimate Australian business trading with the public should have an Australian Business Number, and it's free to check. The government's ABN Lookup tool lets you search a business name or number and see whether it's active, what entity type it is, and how long it's been registered. A business that's only been registered for a few weeks isn't automatically a scam, plenty of good operators are new, but it's a useful data point, and it takes thirty seconds to check against the name on the invoice you've been sent, not just the name on the website.
How you pay tells you a lot
Genuine agencies use proper payment gateways or card payments, not requests to wire money directly into a personal bank account. Paying by credit card gives you a layer of protection a bank transfer doesn't: if something goes wrong and the agency won't resolve it, you may be able to raise a chargeback with your bank. It's not automatic and it's not fast, banks can take weeks to assess a claim, but it exists as a backstop that a direct transfer simply doesn't offer. If a provider insists on transfer only and won't explain why, treat that as a genuine sticking point rather than a minor inconvenience.
Red flags Scamwatch keeps seeing
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission's Scamwatch service has tracked a consistent pattern in travel booking scams for years: prices that sound too good to be true, no verifiable Australian contact number or address, pressure to move payment off the platform you started on, and confirmation emails that look official but come from addresses that don't quite match the business name. None of these alone proves anything, but two or three together is a genuine warning sign, not bad luck. It's also worth a quick search of the agency's name alongside the word "review" on a search engine, rather than relying only on testimonials published on their own site.
What a reasonable deposit structure looks like
A legitimate agency will usually ask for a deposit to secure your booking, with the balance due some weeks before departure, not the full amount months in advance with no clear reason. If a provider is pushing for full payment unusually early, or offering a steep discount only if you pay everything upfront right now, ask why. There can be genuine reasons tied to hotel or flight allocation deadlines, but a good agency will explain that plainly rather than just applying pressure.
What to ask before you pay a deposit
A few direct questions tend to separate a legitimate agency from a shaky one quickly. How is the Umrah visa or permit actually issued, and through which platform? What happens to my deposit if the trip is cancelled? Is my booking confirmed in writing, with hotel and flight references I can independently check? A provider who answers plainly, and puts it in writing without being chased, is telling you something useful about how they'll handle you if a problem comes up later.

Umrah packages involve fixed costs, flights, licensed accommodation near the Haram and permit fees, that don't disappear just because a website says a promotion is on. A price that sits dramatically below every other quote you've seen for the same season and hotel tier deserves a direct question about what's actually included, rather than excitement about the saving. Ask what happens to that price if you need to add a night, change a room type, or bring one more traveller, since that's usually where a suspiciously cheap headline figure falls apart.
