Getting your paperwork sorted is usually the first real task on the road to Umrah, and for most travellers that means the e-visa. It sounds technical, but the process is simpler than it used to be. No queuing at a consulate, no posting your passport away for weeks. You do it from your phone or laptop, and if you get the details right, it moves along quickly.

This guide walks through what the Umrah e-visa actually is, who can apply for one, what documents and photo you will need, how the online application works, what kind of processing time to expect, and the mistakes that trip people up most often. If you would rather skip the research and just get moving, our team can talk you through it on WhatsApp, but it helps to know the basics first.

What the Umrah E-Visa Actually Is

There are two digital routes into Saudi Arabia for Umrah, and it helps to know the difference. The first is the Umrah visa issued through the Nusuk Umrah platform, the official booking system under the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah, where licensed service providers register pilgrims and issue visas as part of an Umrah package. The second is Saudi Arabia's general tourist eVisa, available through the Saudi eVisa portal, which explicitly permits tourism related activities including Umrah, with Hajj excluded, for travellers from eligible countries.

Either way, you will not get a stamp or a sticker in your passport before you fly. The e-visa exists as a digital record tied to your passport number, and you will usually be asked to carry a printed or saved copy along with your passport when you travel.

Who Is Eligible to Apply

Eligibility comes down to your faith and your nationality. Umrah visas, whichever route you use, are for practising Muslims. Adults can apply on their own, and women are able to travel without a male guardian.

Your passport's country of issue decides which application path is open to you. Australia is one of the countries eligible for the Saudi tourist eVisa, so as an Australian passport holder you can generally apply directly through the Saudi eVisa portal for a visa that covers Umrah. Travellers from countries that are not on the eVisa or visa-exempt list usually need to go through a licensed Umrah service provider, who submits the application through Nusuk on their behalf. If you are not sure which category applies to you, check our FAQs or ask us directly before you start filling anything in, since a form submitted through the wrong channel can waste days.

Documents and Photo Requirements

You do not need a mountain of paperwork, but what you submit needs to be accurate and current. At minimum, expect to provide:

Photo and document specifications can shift slightly between the Nusuk platform and the tourist eVisa portal, and they do get updated from time to time. It is worth checking the current requirements listed at the point you apply rather than relying on something you read months earlier.

How the Online Application Works

The tourist eVisa route through the Saudi eVisa portal is built to be simple: you fill out an application, pay the visa fee online, and receive your visa electronically. That is the whole process, done from one portal in one sitting once your documents are ready.

If you are applying through Nusuk as part of a full Umrah package, the process runs alongside your booking. You register your personal and passport details, select your Umrah dates and service provider, add any companions, and review the terms before paying. Your visa is then issued as part of that booking.

Whichever path applies to you, read every field carefully before you submit. Names, dates and passport numbers need to match your travel documents exactly. Small typos are one of the most common reasons applications get sent back for correction, which adds days you would rather not lose.

What to Expect for Processing Time

Online processing is genuinely faster than the old paper-based system, but fast does not mean instant for everyone. Processing speed depends on how busy the system is, how complete your application was, and occasionally on extra checks for certain nationalities or documents. Some applicants see their visa issued quickly, while others wait longer during busier periods.

The safest approach is to apply with plenty of room before your intended travel dates rather than leaving it to the last week. If your flights are already booked or your leave from work is approved, treat the visa as something to sort out early, not as a formality you rush through the night before you fly.

Health and Vaccination Requirements

Saudi Arabia requires that all pilgrims aged one year and older show proof of a quadrivalent meningococcal (MenACWY) vaccination before entering the country for Umrah or Hajj. According to a 2024 report from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the certificate needs to reflect a dose given within the last three to five years, depending on the vaccine type, and at least ten days before arrival. That report followed a small cluster of meningococcal disease cases linked to Umrah travel, most in pilgrims who had not been vaccinated, a fair reminder that the requirement exists for a real reason.

Health requirements are reviewed and can change, so speak to your GP or a travel health clinic before your trip and confirm the current rules through an official source rather than secondhand advice, including this article.

Common Mistakes That Cause Delays or Rejections

Most rejected or delayed applications come down to a short list of avoidable errors:

None of these are complicated to avoid. They just need a slow, careful read through before you hit submit.
