Umrah Expenses

Experiencing Umrah is among the most spiritual experiences a Muslim will ever have. It is a moment of peace, reflection and connecting with Allah. However, before you commence your blessed journey, it is important to think logically and plan sensibly especially in relation to Umrah costs.

Understanding what you are spending on, makes life easier when you travel so that you can focus on your prayers instead of worrying about money. Let's have a closer look at all the components which make up your Umrah spending and how best to control them.

Main Parts of Umrah Expenses

The overall cost of Umrah is determined by a number of key factors. They can all be summed up as airfares, visa, accommodation, transportation, food and Ziyarat.

Airfare is likely to be the largest expense. Also, airfare is often dependent on time of year and destination. From Pakistan, a round-trip flight to Jeddah or Madinah usually costs £150,000 to £300,000 PKR (greatly increased for peak prices). Flying from the UK, round-trip fares will typically be £600 to £1,000 for high-volume time frames like Ramadan or December. Pre-booking these flights will typically save you a great amount.

Next, is the Umrah visa, which normally costs about 300-400 SAR. There are some tour operators that include that fee in their package and others that don’t.

The lodging will also vary widely in your overall cost. A five-star hotel, for example, will see you stay luxuriously close to the Masjid al-Haram or the Masjid al-Nabawi, but it will also be costly. Many pilgrims will stay at 3 or 4-star hotels that are a bit farther from either of the Masjids. These hotels are affordable and many will transport you to the Haram for free.

Pricing, however, can also vary for hotels. The average hotel can cost anywhere from 250 to 700 SAR per night in Makkah, or 200 or 500 SAR per night in Madinah.

Transportation is another major expense. You will require transportation to get around Jeddah, Makkah, and Madinah. Some pilgrims will use a private car, while others will use shared buses or the high-speed Haramain train, which can cost about 150 to 250 SAR per person.

You should also budget for food and daily supplies. While the cost of a simple meal can be as low as 10-25 SAR, the cost of the restaurant meal or hotel buffet can be between 40 to 80 SAR per meal. On average, pilgrims spend 80 to 120 SAR a day on food.

If pilgrims decide to make Ziyarat (which is military visits to holy sites in Makkah and Madinah), the cost for local transportation plus guided tours can range from 100 to 300 SAR.

Average Cost Range

Usually, for an Umrah package that includes flights, visa, hotel, and transfers it will cost inclusive of the following:

• From Pakistan: approximately PKR 250,000 to 600,000.

• From the UK: approximately £800 to £1,800.

• From the USA: approximately $1,800 to $3,500.

Prices will vary depending on seasonality, class of hotel, and level of comfort.

Managing and Reducing Umrah Costs

It is possible to do Umrah on a budget. With a little planning you can manage your budget without stress.

Being able to travel off peak will enable you to find flights/hotel deals at reduced prices. If you can, avoid traveling during Ramadan or on peak holiday months. It is best to book early and always compare travel, accommodation & package deals prior to payment.

Staying at shared accommodation or traveling with family or friends can also help reduce hotel costs, so keep a budget available for food, shopping and other small expenses.

The biggest advice I could give you is to try and book with a reputable and honest booking platform.

Hidden or Extra Costs

There may be a couple of smaller expenses that come up, even after you have purchased a full package. These include SIM cards, laundry, shopping, wheelchair assistance, or extra baggage fees.

It is a good idea to hold back about 300–500 SAR for these smaller, but necessary expenses.

Budgeting Tips for First-Time Pilgrims

Make a plan for each aspect of the trip before you leave. Put together a small budget sheet for flights, visa, hotel, food, and other expenses. Be sure you have a bit of money in Saudi Riyals for quick charges paid from debt.

Use apps like Nusuk for information on mosque permits and updates. Also, just because you are careful with your dollars, does not mean you are cheap, it means you are wise and frugal.

Spiritual Value Over Expense

The significance of Umrah is not in the monetary aspects but in the purity and sincerity of intention and purpose. The value derived from an experience cannot be quantified in a currency denomination.

Booking services such as BookUmrahToday.com assist pilgrims with the journey of Umrah in order to eliminate the stress and headaches of travel planning; and with smart usage of technology, you will simplify your pilgrimage and make it more affordable and spiritually peaceful.
