What has actually changed for Umrah travellers
Rules for Umrah shift more often than most people expect, and 2026 has already brought a few changes worth knowing before you book anything. If you planned a trip a year or two ago, some of what you remember is now out of date. Here is where things stand right now, in plain terms, so you can plan without nasty surprises at the visa stage or the airport.
The visa: a shorter window to enter, the same time to stay
The biggest recent change is the entry window. Saudi Arabia cut the Umrah visa's entry validity from three months down to 30 days from the date it is issued, a change that came in late 2025. That does not shorten your trip. Once you arrive, you can still stay for up to 90 days. What it does mean is timing. Do not apply for your visa too early, because the clock to enter the country starts the moment it is issued. Line the visa up close to your actual travel dates.
There is a second thing that trips people up. You can no longer get an Umrah visa issued without confirmed hotel and transport bookings logged in the Nusuk system first. In practice that means your accommodation and ground travel need to be sorted before the visa comes through, which is one more reason booking through an organised provider saves headaches. Women travelling without a mahram
This one matters to a lot of families. Women aged 18 and over can now apply for an Umrah visa on their own, without a male guardian, as long as they travel with a licensed, organised tour group. It is a real shift from the old rules, and it has opened the door for many who could not previously go. If you are a woman planning to travel solo or with friends, booking through a recognised group is the route that keeps you within the rules.
The health requirement you cannot skip
One vaccination is truly non negotiable. Everyone aged one year and older needs proof of a quadrivalent meningococcal ACWY vaccine. The timing catches people out, so plan ahead. It has to be given at least 10 days before you arrive in Saudi Arabia, and it stays valid for three years if you had the polysaccharide version or five years for the conjugate version. Proof is checked at the visa stage, and turning up without it can mean delays or being turned away.
